Saker Falcon drawing progress

Had a really productive day in the studio today and was able to crack on with this portrait.the head is now complete and i'm starting on the breast feathers, which, like the head feathers are off white in colour with chestnutty-brown markings. So far the falcon is looking quite pale but when the much darker wing feathers go in it will really stand out.i know these portrait style images of birds of prey have been done many times by many competent artists but i still thoroughly enjoy doing them and i think there's always room for another falcon drawing.

What a thrilling start! There never can be to many drawings of such regal birds. The off white feathers are done with such a great flair, the depth in the eye can be seen well even on this scale, and that beak comes right off the page!

off to a great start, indeed. Is going to be a nice one. The Giraff sure came out nice.

Another beautiful drawing....I am always intrigued by you doing the background first, to set the tones, but it does so work.

Brenda:thankyou as ever, your'e enthusiasm for all things art really shines
Gary:thanks very much,i have a good feeling about the falcon,it is the same size as my golden eagle so i'm hoping it will become number 2 of a series of these studies.i was very relieved that the giraffe worked, the cropping took some time to decide on
Vic:i think if you get some tone down in the background even if you leave it a little pale to darken later it helps to make sure that youre not too tentative in laying down tone on the subject.many drawings i see are too pale and lack depth because the tone is being applied too tentatively
